Letters from Kargil

'Letters from kargil' by Diksha Dwivedi is a heart-wrenching read as you will find real letters written by soldiers most of whom died fighting the 1999 kargil war. The book talks about the events leading up to the war highlighting how ill-equipped were the Indian army at that point of time. The happenings till the conclusion of the war is narrated by the author as well as by the voices of army men who wrote about it.

The letters are addressed to wife/brother/father/mother detailing the dangerous terrains they were in and how they miss everything that is the so called 'normal' we have in our lives. There are also excerpts from their dairy which is attached. Some of them left me teary eyed.

I have always admired the passion of people who join the defence forces. Something that's taken shape out of selfless love for our country. Also something which I don't understand because as a family member I would be passing each moment in thoughts about their safety. Quite frankly, I would be more scared than be proud about it.

So many laid their lives and to a lot of us that was just a news story we watched some day. And this book is about how that loss is still felt each day by their family members.

The book makes for such an endearing tribute by Diksha for her dad and many other officers who fought gloriously. For a brief period she brings all of them to life, whom we wouldn't have known otherwise. I believe through those letters/written words they would live forever. 🙏🌼
