Kumari Devi by Benyamin

It's the beautiful cover that prompted me to pick this up.

Kumari Devi is a 65 page short story by Benyamin that takes a jibe at misogyny.

The book is the story of Sunina Shakya Devi, about how she is found by Chanku who puts her as a maid at Gopiettans house. There is a certain enigma that surrounds Sunina Shakiya Devi right from the beginning.

Sunina Shakiya Devi is always impeccably dressed, and all people including Chanku and gopiettan feels she is leading a double life.

Society has created a rulebook for women according to the role they play. Since we are a part of it, it's so ingrained in our thinking that we all fall prey to it.

So who is she actually?. What 'other' life does she have?. What is her history?. Read the book to know more about it. Its a short read and I don't want to divulge anymore details.

Its humourous , poignant and for me it gave me a refreshing break from my current read thereby giving some profound takeaway as bonus.

One striking line from the book :

" 𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆'𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚".

With the advent of social media, I think these lines makes sense now more than ever.
